As a resident of your ward, I am writing to draw your attention to the Bedfordshire Divest for Palestine campaign. Bedford Borough Council has a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that any pension funds that it administers are not invested in companies complicit in violations of international law. The state of Israel is in breach of fundamental norms of international law through its illegal military occupation of Palestinian land, its imposition of a system of apartheid, and its war crimes in Gaza, actions that have resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians and immense human suffering. In light of this, I am urging you to support the Bedfordshire Divest for Palestine campaign’s call for the Council to: • Commit to divest the Bedfordshire Pension Fund, administered by the council from companies complicit in Israel’s war crimes, military occupation and apartheid against Palestinians. This includes arms companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology; companies providing infrastructure for Israel’s unlawful military occupation of Palestinian land; and companies conducting business activity in Israel’s illegal settlements on stolen Palestinian land. This campaign is broad-based and aims to raise awareness of the dire circumstances in which Palestinians are being forced to live. I would be deeply grateful for your support. In particular, I ask that you recognise Bedford Borough Council’s responsibility for the need to take steps to divest from arms companies supplying Israel with weapons, as well as from companies involved in financing, constructing, or maintaining illegal settlements on occupied Palestinian land. As my elected representative, your voice carries significant weight. Your support could help ensure that our public pension funds and council policies reflect values of justice, accountability, and respect for international law. Thank you for taking the time to consider this important matter. I look forward to your response outlining the actions you intend to take in light of the Council’s moral and legal obligations.
